Easter Talkic: Go ahead, put all your eggs in one basket!

You’ve heard it said that a wise person does not put all their eggs in one basket. The origin of the saying goes back to Miquel de Cervantes’ quote in 1605 by Don Quixote: “It is the part of a wise man to keep himself today for tomorrow, and not venture all his eggs in one basket.” In other words, don’t risk losing everything by putting all your confidence in any one person, plan, or venture. But that doesn’t work when it comes to God. If you’re not all in, you’re not in at all.

Let’s talk today about putting all your eggs in the Easter basket. Pinning all your hopes on the Cross and the Empty tomb. Getting out the proverbial boat and walking on the water with Jesus. Being yoked to Him from this point forward forevermore. What might your life be like if you went ALL IN on Easter? What might happen if you put all your eggs— all your hopes and dreams, all your plans and people, all your ideas and aspirations— in the Easter basket?

Easter eggs are fun and they give us the opportunity to talk about the way we hide from God and Jesus who came to seek and save the lost. But Easter egg hunts also give us the opportunity to talk about the parts of our lives we are seeking to hide from God. What have you tucked away in a secret profile or under an anonymous account or a hidden agenda? Do you really think God doesn’t know about that? Time to come clean and put that egg in the Easter basket. You may not want to talk about it with anyone else, but you need to bring it to the cross so you can stand with honest faith before the empty tomb.

Read Luke 9, Matthew 19, Hebrews 11-12 and ask these questions:

What does it mean for YOU to put all your eggs in the Easter basket?

What does it mean for you to go ALL IN on the resurrection of Jesus?

What do you think these passages tell us about putting all our eggs in the Easter basket?

Write words on the eggs here. What parts of your life have you already entrusted to the reality of God’s redemptive plan and what are you still withholding or even hiding from His Lordship?

Yes, Jesus died on the cross to become Savior but He arose from death to become our Lord. It’s time to put ALL your eggs in His basket.
