Gerber has chosen its spokesbaby of the year and his name is Lucas. He’s a one year old from Dalton, Georgia and he has Down Syndrome. That’s a first for Gerber and its a milestone for Americans with Downs or with kids who have Downs. If Lucas’ mom had lived in Iceland, he almost certainly would have been aborted. Actually, a high percentage of children identified as having trisomy 21 (the genetic issue behind Downs) are aborted here in the U.S. as well.
The Gerber choice of Lucas will mean a lot for him and his little family. But it means a lot to others as welll. Lucas will keep us mindful as a nation that people are precious, each of us is made in the image of God and we’ve all got our flaws. And that’s where the Church must rise up and step forward.
