Jesus is literally in the headlines: ‘“Jesus nut” could be the key clue in Hudson River helicopter crash.'”
The story about the recent helicopter crash in Manhattan reads:
A fist-sized piece of steel known as the “Jesus nut” could be a crucial piece of evidence in the horrific helicopter crash that killed a Spanish family of five and their pilot in Manhattan earlier this week.
The so-called “Jesus nut” holds the main rotor to the mast of some helicopters — and some experts have speculated that it could have been why the chopper broke apart midair.
The Jesus nut…why do you think they call it that?
According to one aviation analyst quoted in the article, “There is a particular procedure which has to be checked every time it’s serviced, and it’s known as the ‘Jesus bolt’ … because without that the whole thing will fall apart.”
Well there it is— this is the piece that holds everything together.
That’s actually something the Bible says about Jesus. He literally holds it all together. Without him, the whole creation spins out of control and breaks apart.
It all comes crashing down without Jesus.
Colossians 1:17 says, “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Read that statement in context:
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Colossians 1:15-20
Jesus holds it altogether.
People may call you a nut for believing that, but right now, the headlines are bearing witness to the essential power of the Jesus nut. Don’t miss that opportunity today to get God back into the conversation. Talk about how Jesus holds it all together in your life.
When someone says, “I’m just trying to hold it together,” there’s the wide open door— nobody but Jesus can hold it all together. That’s why helicopter mechanics and pilots call it the Jesus nut.
However, unlike a bolt or nut on a piece of machinery (or our feeble attempts to hold everything and everyone in our own lives together), Jesus never fails.
